Shahdag

Azerbaijan's flagship mountain resort — winter skiing, and cable cars, ziplines and paragliding the rest of the year.

Shahdag is a purpose-built mountain resort in the Quba district, high in the Greater Caucasus beneath the peak it takes its name from. It is the country's principal ski destination and its largest single tourism investment outside Baku.

Crucially for anyone travelling outside winter, it is not only a ski resort. The lifts run year-round and the summer activity programme is substantial, which makes it a legitimate stop in July as well as January.

Winter

The ski season typically runs from December into March or April depending on snowfall, with runs across a range of abilities, snowmaking on the main pistes, equipment hire and instruction available.

Standards are high — the resort was built recently and to international specification — and it is markedly cheaper than comparable European skiing. Queues are short outside domestic holiday peaks.

This is the basis of our Winter Special package, which combines a Baku city day with two nights in the mountains.

Summer

Outside the ski season the resort operates a full activity programme: cable cars for the views, a mountain roller coaster, zip lines, paragliding, horse riding and walking trails from the upper stations.

The mountain roller coaster is genuinely popular with all ages, and the paragliding operates in suitable conditions with tandem flights for beginners.

The scenery does most of the work. At this altitude the Greater Caucasus is properly alpine, and the drive up from Quba through the Candy Cane Mountains is part of the experience.

Getting there

The route from Baku runs north through Khizi and Quba, taking roughly three hours. The Candy Cane Mountains and Five Finger Mountain sit directly on that road, so the drive up is broken by two worthwhile scenic stops rather than being dead time.

Red Village, with the Museum of Mountain Jews, is also on the route just past Quba.
