The route is built around the contrast that makes Baku interesting. You start on the Caspian seafront among canals and modern towers, climb to Highland Park for the panorama, then drop into a twelfth-century walled city that is still a residential neighbourhood. Finishing at Zaha Hadid's Heydar Aliyev Center closes the loop on nine hundred years of architecture in one day.
