Museums in Azerbaijan

Baku has an unusually good museum density for a city its size, and several of its collections are genuinely one of a kind. The Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum was the first institution in the world created specifically for carpets. The Museum of Miniature Books remains the only museum of its kind anywhere. The National Museum of History occupies an oil baron's mansion with several rooms preserved as he left them.

This is a guide to all of them, including those outside the capital. Each page covers what the collection actually contains, how long to allow, what to know before you go, and which of our tours passes nearby.

Absheron Peninsula

Where to start if you only have one day

If you can visit one museum in Baku, make it the Carpet Museum. It is the most-searched museum in the country, it explains technique rather than simply displaying objects, and carpets are the medium through which Azerbaijani regional identity was recorded for centuries. Ninety minutes there teaches you how to read almost everything else you will see.

If your interest is history rather than craft, the National Museum of History is the better choice. As much for Taghiyev's preserved mansion as for the 300,000-item collection. It is the fastest way to understand how a provincial Caspian port became, briefly, the source of roughly half the world's oil.

For something short and unusual, the Museum of Miniature Books inside the Old City takes half an hour, has historically been free, and is the only museum of its kind in the world.

Museums beyond Baku

Two of the most rewarding collections are outside the capital. The Qala Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Complex on the Absheron Peninsula is an open-air site covering five thousand years of settlement, with working craftspeople and in-situ archaeology, the best option near Baku for families.

South of the city, the interpretation centre at Gobustan National Park is among the best-designed museum spaces in the country, and it transforms the rock art outside from marks on stone into a legible record.

Tickets, hours and getting there

Entry tickets are set by each venue and paid on-site. They are not included in any of our tour packages. Your driver takes you to the door and waits, which removes the parking and navigation problem without adding a markup to your ticket.

Opening hours change with the season and some museums close one day a week, so it is worth confirming before building a day around a specific collection. We deliberately do not publish hours here rather than risk publishing a stale figure you plan around.

Most of the central museums are walkable from each other. The outliers. Qala, Gobustan, Villa Petrolea, the Heydar Aliyev Center. Are far easier by car, which is where a private vehicle earns its cost.
