Five Finger Mountain

A five-pronged limestone outcrop rising beside the northern highway, and a long-standing pilgrimage site.

Five Finger Mountain

Beshbarmag. 'five fingers'. Is a limestone massif that rises abruptly out of the coastal plain on the road north from Baku, named for the five prongs at its summit. It is impossible to miss and it has been significant for a very long time.

It is both a landmark and an active pilgrimage site, which makes it a more interesting stop than a simple viewpoint.

A strategic pinch point

The mountain sits at a natural narrowing between the Caucasus foothills and the Caspian, where the passable coastal corridor closes to just a few kilometres.

Every army moving between the steppe and Persia had to pass through this gap. Defensive walls were built across it in antiquity, and the route remains the main road north today. The highway still threads directly beneath the rock.

The pilgrimage

There is a shrine on the rock, reached by a stepped path cut into the slope. Pilgrims of several faiths visit, and the site has a syncretic character older than any single religious tradition here.

The climb is short but genuinely steep, with handrails on the exposed sections. At the top there are small prayer spaces and a wide view over the plain to the Caspian.

Vendors sell food, candles and offerings along the path. On weekends and religious holidays it can be busy.

Visiting

Thirty minutes covers a stop at the base and the view. Allow an hour or more if you want to climb to the shrine.

It is on the same road as the Candy Cane Mountains, so the two combine naturally as scenic stops on the way to Quba and Shahdag.
